History of The Grouse

The Grouse Inn stands at a height of 1,047ft above sea level and has a long and rich history. It was first given a full license in 1861 to a Mr. Abraham Rowbottom but of course the building is much older than that, originally being a farm and barn in 1820. The pub was also run as a farm for the majority of it's early years. It was given it's name due to the local gentry, who would call here throughout the shooting season on the moor behind when the grouse are abundant.

It's most famous resident was Ludwig Wittgenstein, one of the most important philosophers of the twentieth century. He stayed at the pub for a period during the early 1900's. To read more about it click here.
